Delphi Δελφοί
Delphi, on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, was the sanctuary of Apollo and home of the Pythia, the most prestigious oracle of the ancient Greek world. A UNESCO site about 180 km (2.5 hours) from Athens, it is an easy but rewarding private day trip.
The ancients considered Delphi the centre of the world: according to myth, Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the earth and they met here. City-states consulted the oracle before founding colonies or going to war.
The Sacred Way climbs past treasuries to the Temple of Apollo, the theatre and the stadium, while the Archaeological Museum holds the famous Charioteer of Delphi in bronze (c. 470 BC).

Best time to visit Delphi
March–June, September–November. At altitude Delphi is cooler than Athens, but summer midday is still hot. Winter days are crisp, with possible snow on Parnassus.
What to do
The Sacred Way
Walk the same ascending path pilgrims took, with your guide explaining the treasuries built by Greek cities to display their offerings.
The Tholos of Athena Pronaia
The circular 4th-century BC building is Delphi’s most photographed monument, with three reconstructed columns against the valley of olives.
Lunch in Arachova
A mountain village known for cheese, wine and its winter ski scene.

Where to stay
- Delphi town: Boutique hotels with views over the Gulf of Corinth.
- Arachova: Stone-built mountain village, good for an overnight with dinner.
Getting there
- By road from Athens: about 2.5 hours (180 km).
- Public buses exist but a private chauffeur lets you start at opening time.
Local tips
- The museum and the archaeological site have separate sections; allow at least 3–4 hours for both.
Detail from Greek sources
- A single ticket covers both the archaeological site and the museum on the same day. Greek tourism listings quote a full price of €12 and a reduced price of €6; hours are reported as roughly 08:30–16:00, although another listing gives 08:30–15:30 with last entry at 15:00. We confirm on the day.
- The Delphi Archaeological Museum has fourteen galleries on two levels, with the bronze Charioteer as its best-known exhibit. The museum fills with large groups in the afternoon, so morning visits are calmer.
