Meteora is about 350 km and 4.5 hours’ drive from Athens, so a day trip means roughly nine hours on the road. We recommend one night in Kalambaka: you see the pillars at sunset and visit the monasteries the next morning before the main crowds. Six monasteries are active; each closes one day a week, and shoulders and knees must be covered.
Why overnight is better

The light at sunset and early morning is the main reason to visit. A day trip arrives around midday, when the monasteries are busiest. An overnight in Kalambaka or Kastraki also lets you walk the old monks’ paths.
Practical rules
- Each monastery closes one day per week, so we choose which to visit by the day.
- Dress code: shoulders and knees covered; some monasteries lend wraps.
- Photography inside the churches is not permitted.
- There are many steps; ask us for a route for limited mobility.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take the train?
Yes, from Athens to Kalambaka in about 5 hours with a change. A private chauffeur is more flexible and lets you stop at Thermopylae.
How many monasteries should I visit?
Two or three is plenty. The Great Meteoron has the museum; Roussanou has the most photogenic setting.
