Athens to Santorini: ferry or flight?

The short answer

Flying from Athens to Santorini takes about 45 minutes and is the easiest option. High-speed ferries from Piraeus take roughly 5 hours, conventional ferries 7–8 hours. In summer the Aegean’s meltemi wind can delay ferries, so allow a buffer day before an international flight.

Timetables vary by season and operator. Check current schedules before you book.

Our recommendation

Fly out, sail back if you want the experience: a private chauffeur collects you at the Santorini port or airport, and your luggage is delivered to the hotel. If your trip ends in Athens with an international flight, avoid taking the ferry on the day you fly.

Frequently asked questions

Do ferries run in winter?

Less frequently. Schedules are reduced from November to March and some services stop altogether.

Are private transfers available at the port?

Yes. Our chauffeurs meet you at the Athinios port or the airport and take you to your hotel.
